Tengu
The tengu are a breed of large aerial creatures with a strong resemblance to anthropomorphized birds. A generally defining feature of these avian beings is their specific attire - mostly seen donned in vestments like those worn by monks and other mystics. Tengu are regularly seen wielding eccentric but finely crafted relics of divine significance, unequivocally acquired through trade or theft from sacred temples.
The actual origins of the tengu have been lost to history, though many believe them to be spirits or reincarnations of mortal monks and spiritual warriors - in particular, those who in life who had enjoyed an excess of fury, conceit, or hubris. These theories suggest the tengu to be a physical realization of those excessive vices, amplified in a fresh new lamentable form. Persona / Behavior A tengu's time is regularly spent in deep meditation and self improvement, preferring to spend their reclusive lives dwelling deep within heavily sylvan areas or secluded craggy peaks. They seem to have some manner of compulsion to seek absolution from their current state of being and attain spiritual enlightenment. Their demeanor fluctuates from the complex and inspired deliberations not unlike those of humans, to the more instinctive tendencies of wild birds of prey. Due to their debased form, a tengu's rational and logical side is not always dominate, having a strong proclivity for outbursts of calamitous result, cascading their frustrations on anyone or anything around them. It is wise to tread very lightly when in the tengu's turf, as they tend to be terribly territorial. Hoarders and Tricksters Perhaps due to their avian character, tengu find a peculiar satisfaction in collecting shiny trinkets and other objects of variable worth. These creatures, while being avid tricksters, tend to meet their match against more intelligent individuals, themselves being duped into trading one of their stashed valuables for some paltry bauble. |
