  • A Tofu Tail

Description

alchemedium is a Pittsburgh-based independent game studio dedicated to providing unique audio, visual, and gameplay experiences. A group of friends from various fields, we started alchemedium to further our passion for creativity, art, music, and storytelling.

Our mission is to provide quality entertainment and engaging experiences for our audience, and we aspire to create immersive worlds throughout all of our games, each self-contained, but part of a larger alchemedium universe.

History

Beginnings

In late 2012, the three founding members of alchemedium - Ryan Albert, Ryan Brolley, and Doug Locke - co-workers and high school friends - discussed how awesome it would be to make their own video games. Initially a half-jesting remark, it quickly evolved into the formation of alchemedium in early 2013.

Initial game ideas were brainstormed and thrown around until one simple idea - codenamed I've Been Cubed - was decided upon. Soon thereafter Tom Benoit and Andy Randas, musician and writer respectively, were brought on to the project.

Developing A Tofu Tail

A Tofu Tail began initially as a learning project for the alchemedium team - a group of friends from various fields outside of the games industry. This first game was planned to be a simple idea for a puzzle game that would be easy to learn from, without having to worry about some more advanced parts of development.

The team quickly learned that 'easy' was not quite the correct perspective for game development, but grew to love the challenges and hurdles that came along with designing and producing a video game.

alchemedium has gone through several iterations and rebuilds of A Tofu Tail, learning more and more from playtesting and discussions with other developers. The team's design sense grew, but not as fast as the desire for worldbuilding. Creating new worlds quickly became a passion that would permeate in each future project, including A Tofu Tail.

Future Plans

alchemedium's mission is to design gameplay focused on the player's experience, designing foremost to be fun to play, easy to pick up, and immersive - even in small, short bursts of play. The team also wishes to weave an extensive lore base and multiverse from the storylines of the games, media, and other content. And although there is a strong focus on story and feel of the world, characters, and environment in the alchemedium metaverse, each game on its own is planned to be self-contained.
